Apple Reportedly Planning Cheaper Macs to Compete With Budget Chromebooks, PCs

  • Apple plans to launch a budget Mac in the first half of next year, with the J700 in active testing and early production, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
  • Aimed at Chromebook and entry-level Windows buyers, the laptop targets students, businesses and casual users who mainly browse, work on documents or do light media editing and would-be iPad buyers.
  • Using an iPhone processor, the laptop features a lower-end LCD display slightly below 13.6 inches, and internal tests show the chip outperforms the Mac-optimized M1 used a few years ago.
  • Apple's Mac segment grew 13 per cent last quarter, reporting Mac sales of $8.73 billion versus estimates of $8.59 billion, while ranking fourth with about 9 per cent global PC market share.
  • Apple plans a flurry of updates in 2026 including M5 MacBook Air and two new external Mac displays, expecting cheaper Macs to boost adoption in the US market.
