Appeals court upholds sentence for Armstrong supervisor who sexually exploited teen
The appeal court said the trial judge made no error in sentencing Surjit Singh, who exploited a teen employee while managing an Armstrong restaurant.
A Court of Appeal panel dismissed Surjit Singh's second appeal, upholding his 13-month jail sentence for sexual exploitation of a 16-year-old Armstrong fast food restaurant employee.
Singh became temporary manager at the restaurant in 2021, holding significant control over the victim's work schedules and shift quantities during their two-month sexual relationship.
Although Singh argued a sentence exceeding six months would trigger his removal to India, the Court upheld the 13-month term and 12 months of probation.
The Court rejected claims that the sentence ignored mitigating factors like depression, finding the trial judge properly weighed the need for denunciation and deterrence.
Released Oct 2, the decision concludes the legal process for the 2024 conviction, which emerged after text messages between Singh and the employee were discovered.
