Swatch Stores Close for Second Day in Liverpool and Manchester
Swatch closed several branches after hundreds queued for the limited Royal Pop watch, which costs from $335 and is being resold for up to four times retail.
On Saturday, May 16, Swatch closed stores across the UK in London, Liverpool, and Manchester citing 'safety considerations' after hundreds gathered for the Royal Pop launch.
The highly anticipated Royal Pop collection, a collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet, drew massive crowds who camped for days; Esquire magazine reported the 'hype is already off the charts.'
Police were called to manage crowds acting in a threatening manner on Paradise Street in Liverpool, and the Trafford Centre store also closed after shoppers rushed inside.
Priced between £335 and £350 with a limit of one watch per person per day, items are already being listed on eBay for quadruple the original cost.
Disruptions extended internationally to Paris, where police controlled crowds, and Dubai Mall, where the launch event was cancelled; Swatch has not announced when the collection will be available.
