Trump administration tells prosecutors to stand down on Venezuela leader, sources say
The move comes as U.S. officials seek warmer ties with Venezuela, where Rodríguez has been on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s radar since 2018.
The Trump administration instructed federal prosecutors in Miami to halt criminal investigations into Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez, seeking to stabilize the nation following Nicolás Maduro's ouster.
DEA records dating to at least 2018 show Rodríguez consistently surfaced in nearly a dozen investigations involving drug trafficking and gold smuggling allegations; she was linked to Maduro's alleged bag man, Alex Saab.
A Justice Department spokesperson claimed "there was never an investigation into her to shut down," while department policy requires the attorney general to personally approve charging any foreign head of state.
The administration also halted investigations into Colombian President Gustavo Petro, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote that sanctions were lifted without Rodríguez taking concrete actions to restore democratic order.
Rodríguez recently bypassed a 90-day limit for holding elections set by Venezuela's high court, and she deported Saab this month as part of an internal purge while the administration seeks to open Venezuela to U.S. investment.
According to an exclusive report by the Associated Press, the United States is backing off on legal action against Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. The post Trump administration asks prosecutors not to take action against Delcy Rodriguez appeared first on in.gr.
