U.S. Eases Restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos AI Model
Commerce said Anthropic can again provide Mythos 5 to more than 100 trusted institutions, while restrictions on Fable 5 stay in place.
- On Friday, the US government partially reversed a ban on Anthropic's Mythos 5, allowing the company to release the cybersecurity AI model to more than 100 select institutions, including government agencies.
- Two weeks ago, the government abruptly suspended access to Mythos and Fable for foreign nationals, citing national security concerns without providing specific details, which Anthropic understood involved a potential jailbreak vulnerability in Fable 5.
- Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick determined that Anthropic had "appropriate safeguards" in place, noting the company worked with the government to address risks associated with the covered models.
- Under the new arrangement, licences are no longer required to export Mythos 5 to identified institutions or foreign national employees, and Anthropic is provisioning the approved set of providers to restore access.
- Friday's decision does not ease restrictions on Fable, though a source told Bloomberg that extended weekend conversations aimed to bring back access soon, as Anthropic works with the government on a policy framework.
