AssuranceAmerica Data Breach Exposes Records of 6.9 Million Drivers
AssuranceAmerica said hackers stole names, contact details and policy data after targeting an employee, and it began notifying affected customers.
U.S. insurance provider AssuranceAmerica confirmed a data breach affecting 6.99 million people, marking the year's largest known spill of driver's license numbers. Notification letters to affected customers are scheduled for Friday, July 10.
AssuranceAmerica detected suspicious activity in its IT systems on March 17, noting hackers "targeted one of the Company's employees." The firm concluded its investigation on June 15 after disabling compromised credentials.
Stolen files included names, contact information, insurance policy details, and driver's license numbers, with South Carolina and Texas residents among those hardest hit. Over 600,000 and 500,000 residents were affected in those states, respectively.
AssuranceAmerica notified law enforcement while implementing enhanced monitoring and password resets, urging customers to monitor financial accounts. One law firm is now considering a class action lawsuit regarding the incident.
The incident follows a string of major data breaches involving government-issued IDs this year, including recent exposures at Texas Parks and Wildlife and a Japanese hotel system. Driver's license numbers can facilitate identity theft.
