Another Marineland Whale Dies at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago
The 27-year-old beluga was on life support for nearly four hours, and blood tests showed electrolyte abnormalities and dangerously acidic blood, officials said.
Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga, died Wednesday evening at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium despite four hours of life support by veterinary teams. She was one of ten whales transferred from Marineland of Canada this summer.
Shedd accepted the belugas after Marineland cited financial insolvency and threatened euthanasia without relocation. Caspian's death marks the fifth beluga loss at the aquarium in recent months, following four other rescues and one longtime resident.
Preliminary necropsies of other rescued belugas revealed severe chronic gastrointestinal disease; foreign objects including rocks and paint were found in Peekachu's stomach, suggesting pre-existing health issues.
Shedd veterinary teams are conducting a necropsy on Caspian to determine her specific cause of death. The six remaining rescued belugas are stable and eating full diets under close monitoring.
Dr. Lori Marino, neuroscientist and animal behavior expert, argues that transport stress likely worsened pre-existing chronic conditions. She contends these animals "were not in any condition to be moved, to be transferred.
