Anduril’s drone wingman begins flight tests

Anduril’s YFQ-44A completed its first semiautonomous flight in less than two years from design, advancing the Air Force’s plan for 1,000 AI-driven drone wingmen.

  • On Friday, Anduril's YFQ-44A drone completed its first flight at an undisclosed California test location and is the second U.S. Air Force prototype tested under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.
  • Last year, the Air Force selected the YFQ-42A drone and YFQ-44A drone for the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, awarding April 2024 contracts and beginning May 2025 ground testing.
  • Anduril designed the flight to be semi-autonomous, removing the stick-and-throttle operator and using autonomy software for takeoff and landing, Jason Levin said.
  • The flight moves the program closer to a 2026 production decision, and the U.S. Air Force said it shielded the CCA effort from the shutdown, with testing at Edwards, Nellis, and Beale Air Force Bases.
  • Longer term, the U.S. Air Force aims to field a fleet of at least 1,000 AI-driven, semiautonomous CCAs to operate with fighters like the F-22 and F-35, officials said.
