Ancient DNA solves mystery over origin of medieval Black Death

DNA analysis suggests bubonic plague began in Kyrgyzstan in the 1330s. The disease killed tens of millions in Europe, Asia and north Africa. Researchers analyzed ancient DNA samples from the teeth of skeletons buried between 1338-1339 in cemeteries near Lake Issyk Kul. They were able to find the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, in three of them.
