Trump Takes Mixed Approach on Iran Deal and Nuclear Demands
Trump aides say he is keeping multiple options open while pushing to strip Iran of enriched uranium and ballistic missile capability.
President Donald Trump recently managed to both trumpet a tentative agreement with Iran to end the war and raise questions about its viability in the same statement.
Trump indicated that two top objectives for the deal are to remove Tehran's stockpile of enriched uranium and eliminate its ability to fire ballistic missiles.
Aides from his first administration say the president likes to lean on the business concept of "optionality," or staying flexible enough to have multiple choices available.
Desai said the ceasefire agreement amounted to "the Art of the Deal in practice," noting resulting declines in energy prices.
Historian Daniel Immerwahr of Northwestern University said Trump is "consistently inconsistent," refusing to be pinned down even when it unsettles financial markets.
