Analysis: Rates of Obesity Among U.S. Adults Doubled in 3 Decades

Study projects 126 million U.S. adults will have obesity by 2035, with prevalence more than doubling since 1990 and notable disparities across demographics and states.

  • Nearly half of American adults are projected to have obesity by 2035, with about 126 million U.S. adults, researchers at the University of Washington reported in JAMA.
  • Using BMI data from NHANES, BRFSS and the Gallup Daily Survey, the study pooled records from over 11 million participants and found obesity prevalence more than doubled from 19.3% in 1990 to 42.5% by 2022.
  • Black females had the highest 2022 prevalence at 56.9%, and the study projects 60% of Black women and 54% of Latino women will have obesity by 2035, while women under 35 showed the steepest rises.
  • Experts cautioned that rising obesity prevalence will strain U.S. health care systems, as health care costs associated with obesity approached 200 billion in 2019, and the burden is expected to grow, Castro-Tie said.
  • Researchers recommended multifactorial treatment and equitable clinical access, urging measures like SB 12, SB 677, menu labeling, beverage taxes, and stronger school nutrition standards for Black and Latino populations.
