Quebec aluminum plant to reopen Wednesday, union says as Trump’s tariffs trigger uncertainty

Hours after saying Brazil’s Alubar Metal would close its factory in Bécancour, Que., the Syndicat des Métallos FTQ union said it was told by the company that the closure was only temporary

The tariff war launched by the President of the United States on Tuesday has already resulted in the closure of a first plant in Quebec. The Alubar factory in Bécancour, which produces aluminum rods from the molten metal from nearby aluminium plants, ABI, announced on Monday night that it was ceasing its operations following the US President's decision to impose tariffs on all Canadian products.

The tariff revolution imposed by US President Donald Trump on its Canadian and Mexican neighbors, as well as on Chinese competitors, could, in fact, act as a boomerang for the United States economy.
