UM Bio Station Detects ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Flathead Watershed
Researchers found PFAS and pharmaceuticals in multiple Flathead watershed waters, with 10 of 40 PFAS compounds detected and low levels of three known compounds.
Recently, the Flathead Lake Biological Station confirmed both PFAS and PPCPs across the Flathead Watershed after sampling water from lakes, rivers, and creeks last fall.
Known as 'forever chemicals,' PFAS are synthetic compounds resistant to degradation; PPCPs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products increasingly detected in waterbodies worldwide.
Of 40 targeted PFAS compounds, researchers detected 10, with three appearing at quantifiable levels; however, concentrations remained well below established thresholds for safe drinking water.
FLBS Director Jim Elser noted that while current concentrations are low, scientists remain concerned about potential bio-magnification in food webs and poorly understood long-term ecological impacts.
Expanded monitoring is necessary to identify pollution sources, as Elser said researchers need additional funding to better understand how PFAS and PPCPs impact the watershed ecosystem.
