Political tensions are the main cause of the resignation of these local elected officials, according to a study published on Thursday, 19 June, particularly in the small communes.
Nearly 2,200 mayors have resigned since the last municipal elections in July 2020. An unprecedented phenomenon, highlighted by a survey carried out by Martial Foucault for the AMF, the association of mayors of France. Less than a year before the municipal elections, the elected representatives question themselves.
"The resignations of mayors have reached a historic level", reveals a study carried out for the Association des maires de France (AMF), published on Thursday. Since the beginning of their term in 2020, 2,189 mayors have resigned in France, or 6%. This is four times more than between 2008 and 2014.
