Amnesty Report Documents Alleged ADF Atrocities in Eastern DRC
Amnesty says the rebel group’s attacks have displaced civilians, cut access to food and healthcare, and included forced marriage and child recruitment.
- On Monday, Amnesty International released a report accusing the Allied Democratic Forces of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, citing widespread murder, sexual violence, and forced recruitment.
- Fighters targeted civilians across North Kivu and Ituri provinces; in one September 2025 attack in Ntoyo village, they used hammers and machetes to kill more than 60 people at a wake.
- Amnesty documented 46 cases of abduction, including hostages held for ransom, while women and girls were forced into marriages with fighters as a systematic recruitment incentive for the Islamic State-linked group.
- "Civilians in the eastern DRC have suffered extensive brutality," said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International's Secretary General, urging the Congolese government to strengthen protection measures and early warning systems.
- The ADF has intensified operations while security forces focus on M23 advances, leaving communities vulnerable without adequate protection from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and UN mission MONUSCO.
