Nearly Half of Americans Say U.S. Democracy Is Failing to Function Properly, Poll Finds
A Kettering Foundation-Gallup survey shows about 50% of U.S. adults rate democracy poorly amid low confidence in institutions and political leaders, with a 0.9% margin of error.
- About half of U.S. adults believe democracy is not functioning well in the United States, while only around one-quarter think it is working well, marking a decline from past decades when majorities thought democracy was generally working.
- About two-thirds of Americans agree that democracy is the best form of government, but few believe their leaders are committed to democratic governance or that government decisions reflect the will of the people.
- Only those who identify as strong Republicans are substantially more likely than Democrats and independents to say democracy is performing well, while those struggling economically are especially likely to have a negative view of democracy's performance.
