Attacker who killed US troops in Syria was a recent recruit to security forces, official says
The attacker, a recent Syrian security forces recruit and alleged former ISIS member, killed two National Guard members and one civilian, prompting arrests of suspected co-conspirators.
- On Saturday, a gunman stormed a meeting near Palmyra, killing two members of the Iowa National Guard and an American civilian interpreter, the Syrian Interior Ministry said the attacker was Tariq Satouf al-Hamd.
- Amid rapid recruiting after last year's offensive, the attacker was among 5,000 members in the Badiya division whom Syrian officials monitored and planned to dismiss for `extremist Islamist ideology`, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba said.
- Following the attack, security forces launched sweeps in the Badiya region and arrested six General Security personnel suspected of coordination, while reports say three wounded Syrian security members clashed with the attacker in the corridor meeting room at the General Security headquarters.
- The episode complicates expanding U.S.-Syrian ties as Syria joined the global anti-ISIS coalition, but HTS and some forces have Islamist roots, exposing U.S. forces to insider risks.
