Today we celebrate the 249th anniversary of America’s founding. With the Declaration of Independence, our founders sought to overthrow tyranny with a simple and self-evident idea. They knew that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights. Our founding ideals of freedom, justice, and equality have guided our country for nearly 250 years.

Not all recipes created equal
Next year, we will celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but let us not forget that the “shot heard round the world” occurred in 1775, which sparked the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

“Semiquincentennial” is a pretty big word favored by sesquipedalians (people who use big words). It’s a word most of us will use once every 250 years. Not by coincidence, expect to hear it used every now and then in the next 12 months as people of the United States plan how they will observe the 250th anniversary of July 4, 1776, one of the great days of world history.
