'Danger to Life' as Amber Weather Warning for Strong Winds Declared in Scotland
Storm Amy is expected to bring gusts over 60 mph, heavy rain, and travel disruptions including ferry cancellations, with warnings of power cuts and damage, the Met Office said.
- The Met Office issued an amber wind warning for Orkney from 5pm on Friday, October 3 until 9am on Saturday, October 4 as Storm Amy approaches.
- The Met Office says Storm Amy is developing in the Atlantic and will bring disruptive wet and windy weather across northern and western Britain, with gusts of 60-70 mph and possible excesses of 95 mph in exposed areas.
- The amber warning warns of power cuts, structural damage and dangerous coastal waves, with ferry companies advising cancellations and Scotland's Railway closing northern lines from 6pm Friday.
- Residents are urged to assemble a small essentials kit and prepare for possible power cuts, and in an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
- While winds should ease for most by Saturday afternoon, the Northern Isles and far north of Scotland will stay very strong through to the end of Saturday, before the system pulls away northeast into Sunday, leaving unsettled conditions at the start of next week.
