Amazon voiced concerns about Anthropic AI models before US government's crackdown: Report

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised security concerns, and Anthropic said the order forced it to disable access to its latest models for all customers.

  • On Friday, the United States government issued an export control directive requiring Anthropic to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign nationals. Anthropic disabled both models for every customer to comply, citing national security concerns.
  • The Department of Defense recently labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk, a designation usually reserved for foreign adversaries. Europe and Canada have long worried about overreliance on American technology, particularly under President Donald Trump.
  • Wharton professor Ethan Mollick described using Mythos as beyond "working with a wizard." He said, "I am no longer sure I am the wizard. I describe what I want, I pay for it, and I judge the result."
  • Anthropic confirmed its other models remain live, but the directive creates uncertainty for businesses and foreign nationals working in America. The company is working to restore access to the suspended models as soon as possible.
  • Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon said, "Access to advanced AI capabilities is increasingly connected to national security, economic competitiveness and technological sovereignty." Canada is now focused on building domestic capacity and partnerships to benefit from this technology.
