Amazon, Corning Announce Plans to Boost U.S. Fiberoptics Manufacturing
The pact expands U.S. fiber production for Amazon’s data centers and adds 1,000 jobs at Corning factories, the companies said.
On Monday, Amazon and Corning announced a multiyear agreement to supply optical fiber powering Amazon's expanding U.S. data centers, creating 1,000 jobs at Corning's North Carolina factories.
The Trump administration has encouraged Big Tech to onshore AI supply chains; this deal follows up to $6 billion from Meta in January and up to $3.2 billion from Nvidia in May.
For Corning, fresh demand from artificial intelligence is reinvigorating the 175-year-old business as optical fiber has become essential infrastructure for shifting enormous data volumes between racks and chips at high speed.
Corning's shares jumped 9 per cent on the news while Amazon's rose about 1 per cent; Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman noted the company's investments in North Carolina have created over 26,000 jobs.
Corning CEO Wendell Weeks said in Monday's press release that "next year the hyperscalers will be our biggest customers," calling the agreement a significant milestone for American manufacturing and resilient U.S. production.
