Amanda Gonzalez Wins Democratic Nomination for Secretary of State in Colorado
Gonzalez led by 25.8 points when the Associated Press called the race, and she will face Republican James Wiley in November.
On Tuesday, Jefferson County Clerk Amanda Gonzalez won the Democratic nomination for Colorado secretary of state, defeating state Sen. Jessie Danielson. The Associated Press called the race about 25 minutes after polls closed.
Campaigning on election system protections, the attorney and former executive director of Colorado Common Cause rallied progressive voters. She pledged to defend Colorado's mail-in voting system and improve campaign finance transparency.
Danielson, who has served in the state legislature since 2019, focused her platform on sponsoring voter-rights bills and creating automatic voter registration. Despite her legislative experience, she could not overcome the progressive challenge.
In the November general election, Gonzalez will face Republican James Wiley, the former head of the state Libertarian Party who calls himself the "Red Flame of Liberty." Wiley ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
The winner will succeed Secretary of State Jena Griswold, overseeing Colorado elections through the 2030 cycle. This position is critical as the state prepares to defend its secure election system from potential interference.
