Alzheimer's Foundation offers tips to prevent wandering during dangerous cold
Caregivers are urged to secure homes and use tracking programs to prevent wandering during extreme cold, which raises risks of hypothermia and injury, the Alzheimer's Foundation says.
- The Alzheimer's Foundation of America issued cold-weather safety tips to caregivers and family members to prevent wandering as parts of the U.S. face ice, snow and extreme cold.
- Visual and environmental triggers such as snow, jackets, shoes, and keys can prompt sudden departures, while dementia may impair recognizing cold, causing people living with dementia or Alzheimer's to leave without proper clothing.
- The foundation recommends hiding car keys, jackets and purses near doors, creating indoor walking paths and structured activities, installing cameras, compiling emergency info, and using the AFA Helpline for support.
- Community programs such as Project Lifesaver use tracking technology first responders activate to locate wanderers, while Becky Hadiaris and Age Friendly Saco's 100 volunteers support social gatherings.
- Because plans must be individualized, caregivers should update safety plans immediately as sub-zero wind chills increase risks, and call the AFA helpline for assistance, Robin Schultz said.
