All residents removed from Epping asylum hotel, says council
The council said only security staff remain after the Home Office moved residents out as a precaution over fire-safety regulations.
On Thursday, the Home Office vacated all asylum seekers from The Bell Hotel in Essex, leaving only security staff onsite; Epping Forest District Council stated they were not informed in advance of the sudden removal.
Epping Forest MP Neil Hudson met with Minister for Border Security and Asylum Alex Norris to press for permanent closure, citing a "series of deeply troubling incidents" and weekly community protests at the site.
Last year, resident Hadush Kebatu sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, becoming a flashpoint; the Epping Forest District Council's legal challenge to stop the hotel's use failed in March following a High Court ruling.
Reports indicate precautionary fire safety regulations prompted the sudden removal of residents, with the Home Office moving asylum seekers into basic accommodation as part of broader safety efforts.
The Government maintains it is removing incentives for illegal migrants by closing every asylum hotel, with data showing asylum seeker populations in hotels have fallen by 35% in the last year.
