Algeria to send troops to Niger in first foreign deployment in over 50 years

Lawmakers backed the move to secure oil facilities and other strategic assets, marking Algeria’s first foreign troop deployment since the 1970s.

  • On Sunday, Algeria's Council of the Nation unanimously approved deploying troops to neighbouring Niger; the People's National Assembly is expected to vote on the measure later today.
  • Earlier this month, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed Algeria sent fighter jets to Niamey in late August to help thwart a 'coup attempt' that destabilized the capital.
  • The vote followed a visit to Algeria last week by Niger's Defence Minister General Salifou Modi, who held talks with Tebboune and Chief of Staff of the People's National Army General Said Chanegriha.
  • If approved, this deployment represents the first military mission outside Algeria's borders since the 1973 October War, known to Israelis as the Yom Kippur War.
  • The military units to be deployed are expected to be tasked with securing oil facilities in Niger, following a military cooperation protocol the two sides recently signed.
