Alberta premier speaks French in Quebec speech, commiserates on Habs’ playoff demise
Smith urged Quebec business leaders to expand trade and partnerships with Alberta, saying the provinces share key interests in energy, minerals and manufacturing.
On Wednesday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith began a two-day trip to Quebec City, urging business leaders to forge a stronger economic alliance between the two provinces.
Smith, joking about her limited French language skills, connected with the audience by commiserating over the Montreal Canadiens' recent playoff exit, noting that Albertans supported the team as the last Canadian hope.
Smith identified key collaborative opportunities in aerospace, defense, critical minerals, and clean energy, while noting Alberta's agriculture and plastics sectors complement Quebec's food processing and manufacturing industries.
Quebec Canada relations minister Jean Boulet welcomed the visit, emphasizing that Quebec and Alberta can count on each other amid geopolitical instability and their historically strained relationship with Ottawa.
Smith noted shared interests in deepening independence within Canada, citing the need for an east-west energy corridor to strengthen sovereignty and security as global conditions shift.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith hopes for a new collaboration with Quebec. Will it be called "Alber-bec" or "Qué-berta?" It doesn't matter: the two provinces must support each other in these difficult times.
