More than 800,000 young children seeing social media content 'designed to hook adults', figures show
CSJ analysis finds 40% of parents report children aged 3-5 using social media, raising concerns about exposure to adult-focused content and calls for school smartphone bans.
- The Centre for Social Justice estimated 800,000 UK children aged three to five use social media, based on applying the latest population data to previous research.
- Ofcom survey data showed almost four in 10 parents of three-to-five-year-olds reported their child uses at least one social media app, with roughly 2.2 million children in this age group as of 2024.
- Lord John Nash warned `children who haven't yet learned to read being fed content and algorithms designed to hook adults`, and called for a public health campaign and an age 16 social media limit holding tech firms accountable.
- The CSJ is advocating that smartphones be banned in all schools, while UK government ministers say schools already have the power to ban phones and campaigners including Brianna Ghey's mother demand stronger policies.
- From 10 December Australia will require social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat to prevent under-16s from accounts, while the CSJ said users aged three to five rose by around 220,000 year-on-year.
