Alabama Power Readying for Widespread Power Outages During Winter Storm
Alabama Power is pre-positioning over 2,000 crews to respond to anticipated ice accumulation, tree damage, and power outages during the winter storm this weekend.
- Ahead of the weekend storm, Alabama Power mobilized crews and enacted its storm plan, with 2,000 additional resources arriving Friday afternoon.
- On Wednesday the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch from Friday 6 p.m. until Sunday 6 p.m. for north and some central Alabama counties, warning of mixed precipitation with two to 3 inches of snow and sleet and ice accumulations above one quarter inch.
- Corey Sweeney, Alabama Power Storm Center operations manager, said crews checked vehicles, fueled trucks, stocked supplies, and wore ice cleats and tire chains to prepare for icy conditions.
- Alabama Power said crews will remain on call throughout the weekend to restore power, while the National Weather Service warned outages could last more than a day due to ice damage.
- Forecast uncertainty means forecasters expect better clarity within 48 hours and urge daily checks as Saturday and Sunday are First Warning Impact Days, the National Weather Service in Birmingham warned.
