Airlines dropping flight change fees ahead of major winter storm
Major U.S. airlines waive flight change fees for travelers at up to 41 airports to reduce disruptions from a southern winter storm forecast to bring snow, ice, and freezing rain.
- Airlines began waiving change fees, with American Airlines offering free rescheduling for passengers booked Jan. 23–25 to travel Jan. 21–28.
- Meteorologists warned days ahead about hazardous travel as a major winter storm is set to blast southern U.S. states starting Friday, with heavy snow, ice, and freezing rain from Texas to the Carolinas.
- The airline listed 41 eligible airports and required passengers to book the same cabin of service; waivers are limited to changes made on or before Jan. 28.
- The U.S. Department of Transportation said airlines must offer refunds for canceled or significantly changed flights, but federal law does not require additional compensation beyond refunds, which depend on airline staff and policies.
- Some carriers had not issued advisories as of 10 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday; Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways had no travel advisories, and waivers apply only to travelers to or from 34 eligible airports covering 'controllable' issues.
