200 Jobs at Risk as Airline Eyes Manchester Airport Base Closure
Aer Lingus plans to stop selling tickets after March and consults on job losses as union warns of strike ballot closing January 26 amid concerns over profitability.
On Thursday, Aer Lingus stopped selling transatlantic tickets from Manchester for travel from March 31st and began consulting staff to mitigate job losses.
Lynne Embleton told The Irish Times the Manchester base's margin lags Irish long-haul operations, making further investment difficult as options to raise margins have not been viable.
Around 200 staff face potential redundancy, including nearly 130 cabin crew and around 30 pilots who may be offered roles in Ireland.
Unite will ballot members with the vote closing on January 26th, and the union warned strikes could begin in late February, risking disruption to long‑haul routes from Manchester.
Aer Lingus says the Manchester base could still deliver around £35 million from two aircraft, with a third‑quarter operating profit of £170 million, indicating strong financial performance.
