Airbus Debuts Autonomous U145 Helicopter with No Cockpit for Combat

The cargo-focused platform is being shown at the Berlin Air Show as Airbus expands military and logistics roles for the H145-based drone.

  • At the Berlin Air Show this week, Airbus debuted the U145 autonomous drone based on its H145 helicopter, designed primarily for cargo supply missions.
  • More than 1,800 H145 family helicopters are in service globally, logging more than 8.5 million flight hours. Airbus builds the twin-engine helicopter in Mississippi.
  • Fitted with a 'specialized' sensor suite and AI, the platform features a nose door, foldable loading table, and dedicated cargo floor. It is the second crewed rotorcraft converted by Airbus into a drone.
  • Airbus Helicopters CEO Matthieu Louvot said the firm will partner with 'leading autonomous mission partners' to develop U145 capabilities. Military roles include armed scouting, surveillance, and acting as a 'mothership' for air-launched effects.
  • The U145 will fly with a safety pilot by year-end, with entry into service expected in early 2030 following two years in the Aerial Logistics Connector Middle Tier of Acquisition Rapid Prototyping Program.
