Air traffic controllers face a 30-year staffing low and worked unpaid during the shutdown, causing 44% of flight delays on Sunday, U.S. Transportation Secretary said.

  • Union members handed out flyers at airport terminals while Philadelphia International Airport reported about 26 delays as controllers worked without pay, with Chapman saying, `Today was payday, and we collected a $0 paycheck` and warning, `We don't want to become a safety issue`.
  • Drawing from the 2018-19 shutdown, Senator Ted Cruz introduced legislation to pay controllers, which could be voted on next week, while Daniel Elwell warned `At about the 25-day point out of 35, the stress on the controllers is really what broke the shutdown at that time, and we ended it`.
