Aid sector calls out lack of any mention of foreign aid in federal budget
Aid groups say the first budget in more than 15 years omits foreign aid, while Ottawa prepares a foreign policy review.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's government tabled a federal budget on Thursday with no mention of foreign aid, marking the first such omission in more than 15 years.
Aid groups assume Ottawa will maintain its plan to cut $2.7 billion in foreign aid over four years, though advocates expressed relief the government announced no additional reductions.
Co-Operation Canada head Kate Higgins called the budget "largely silent" on international development, while Results Canada policy director Lindsay Sheridan said her team found no relevant terms in the document.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Friday a foreign policy update will arrive in "a matter of weeks" and include the government's "approach on development."
The One Campaign urges Ottawa to commit $5.5 billion annually on development, while United Nations humanitarian head Tom Fletcher praised Canada as a "humanitarian superpower" just days before the budget.
