AI is not yet replacing workers in the US, Yale study finds

Yale and Brookings researchers found AI boosts productivity with no broad job losses 33 months after ChatGPT’s release, despite concerns about entry-level employment.

  • Through July, Yale University's Budget Lab and the Brookings Institution found no evidence of broad U.S. job disruption since ChatGPT's release, stating `Overall, our metrics indicate...` said Martha Gimbel.
  • Several firms citing AI in layoffs prompted closer scrutiny, as tech executives warned of upheaval that contrasted with later data and spurred Yale Budget Lab's study.
  • About 18% of workers hold jobs in the highest AI-exposure category, stable since January 2023, with financial services, Information sector, and Professional and Business Services most exposed.
  • The study finds AI is augmenting human work with productivity gains, but researchers warn administrative support and customer service roles face risks without upskilling by executives and policymakers.
  • The Yale research team calls for comprehensive usage data from major AI companies, noting it's too early to predict long-term impacts and citing conflicting studies, including recent graduate employment declines.
