After presidential election, Ugandan police detain a key ally of opposition figure Bobi Wine

Muwanga Kivumbi is accused of organizing attacks linked to election violence that killed seven, as police prepare to arraign him amid disputed claims of the incidents, officials said.

  • On Thursday, police detained Muwanga Kivumbi, lawmaker and deputy president of the National Unity Platform, accusing him of election violence in Butambala that left seven dead, police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke said.
  • Last week's presidential election was marred by violence and a dayslong internet shutdown, with official results giving Yoweri Museveni 71.6% and Bobi Wine 24.7%, results Wine rejected as fake.
  • Some of the 21 suspects taken into custody over Butambala violence pointed at Kivumbi, officials reported running battles between police and his supporters, while Kivumbi said victims were killed by armed forces.
  • Bobi Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, said he escaped a raid and is on the run, constantly moving and sheltered by ordinary citizens, while his wife and relatives remain under house arrest.
  • Observers warned that arrests had 'instilled fear', and President Museveni accused the opposition of trying to use violence, calling them 'terrorists' on Sunday.
