After cornrows controversy, Baltimore Rock Opera Society’s new leader is out
The nonprofit said four of its six board members will step down and urged volunteers to fill leadership gaps immediately.
The Baltimore Rock Opera Society fired Executive Director Kelly Carnes on Wednesday, weeks after hiring her, following backlash over a video showing her wearing cornrows at a September 10 puppet karaoke fundraiser.
Backlash emerged two weeks ago when social media users criticized the video, with some alleging cultural appropriation. Carnes defended the hairstyle as a 'protective style' worn during Burning Man in Nevada to manage harsh desert conditions.
BROS promised to revise its Anti-Discrimination Policy to address cultural representation and implement 'initiatives and systemic changes related to community culture, anti-racist practices, inclusion, accountability, equity, and access' within the organization.
Four of six board members, including Chair Naomi Davidoff, will step down December 31 following a September 22 board meeting. Carnes' attorney, Owen Bement, alleges potential violations of Maryland's anti-discrimination laws under the CROWN Act.
Despite leadership upheaval, the Baltimore Rock Opera Society continues promoting its upcoming production, 'The Orb of Pondering,' scheduled October 30 to November 7 at Zion Church. The organization urgently needs qualified volunteers to fill vacant board positions.
