EAST SHEWA, OROMIA, ETHIOPIA, AUG 11 – The African Development Bank will lead $8 billion in debt financing for Bishoftu International Airport, designed to handle 60 million passengers annually and boost Ethiopia's aviation capacity.
- On Monday in Addis Ababa, the African Development Bank signed an agreement to mobilize up to $8 billion for constructing Bishoftu International Airport in Ethiopia.
- The agreement came in response to Ethiopia's need to overcome capacity challenges at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport, which is currently operating close to its maximum designed passenger capacity of around 22 million.
- Bishoftu International Airport will be located 40 km southeast of Addis Ababa in Abusera, with initial capacity for 60 million passengers and planned expansion to over 110 million annually.
- AfDB committed up to $500 million, pending board approval, to anchor this $10 billion project, while Ethiopian Airlines will fund 20%, framing the airport as a transformative hub for African connectivity.
- Construction is set to start in late 2025 with completion in 2029, and the airport aims to position Ethiopia among the world's top 20 aviation hubs by 2035, supporting regional integration goals.
