Africa: AU Commission Chairperson to Deploy Panel of the Wise for South Sudan Mediation

A week after Vice-President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest by the security forces of President Salva Kiir, mediation initiatives took shape. After the displacement of Kenyan opponent Raila Odinga as a special envoy, a high-level delegation led by Domitien Ndayizeye, former President of Burundi, and retired Kenyan judge Effie Owuor, both members of the AU Group of Wise Men, will start a five-day mission to Juba.
