Affordable Care Act enrollment is slightly ahead of last year so far, despite expiring subsidies
Enrollment is up by nearly 400,000 from last year despite expiring subsidies that could more than double premiums for many, data from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows.
- Friday, federal data from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows nearly 5.8 million Americans had picked Affordable Care Act plans by day 29, nearly 400,000 more than last year.
- The Senate is expected to vote this week on a Democratic proposal to extend tax credits as Democrats in Congress press amid fierce debate, while enhanced subsidies set to expire at the end of 2025 would more than double premiums, KFF warns.
- In most states, the open-enrollment window began Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 15, with people wanting later starts able to sign through Jan. 15; older, sicker people tend to enroll early and experts say the snapshot is incomplete.
- Joe Antos, health economist, American Enterprise Institute, said Republicans will likely use the data to argue expiring subsidies won’t hurt affordability, but many Republicans in vulnerable U.S. House districts expect backlash next year if no extension occurs, while millions of Americans benefit from enhanced subsidies.
- Five years ago about 12 million people selected ACA plans, and enhanced tax credits helped enrollment grow to more than 24 million, while this year's totals are about 1.5 million lower than the 7.3 million two years ago.
