Advocates allege ‘inhumane’ conditions at Chicago-area ICE facility in new lawsuit
- On Friday, Illinois advocates including the ACLU of Illinois and MacArthur Justice Center sued federal authorities, alleging `inhumane and torturous` conditions at the Broadview processing facility in Broadview, Ill.
- Amid months of scrutiny, advocates say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents denied private attorney calls and barred members of Congress, faith leaders and journalists, creating a `black box`.
- Lawyers and relatives describe Broadview as a de facto detention center holding up to 200 people at a time without access to legal counsel, and Alexa Van Brunt said agents coerced detainees into signing paperwork they did not understand.
- Attorneys accuse ICE, Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection of violating detainees' constitutional rights and seek court-ordered facility improvements, while DHS dismissed claims and ICE and DHS did not immediately respond Friday.
- Protesters gathered outside the Broadview processing facility on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, and a separate lawsuit by a coalition of news outlets alleges agents used tear gas as U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis ordered badges, banned riot-control tactics and required body cameras.
