Nigeria: Again, Court Stops PDP From Conducting National Convention

The court found Sule Lamido's suit meritorious, halting PDP's convention to prevent constitutional violations and ensure fair contest for national chairman, the judge ruled.

  • On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the Peoples Democratic Party from holding its scheduled national convention and barred the Independent National Electoral Commission from supervising it pending the substantive suit.
  • On 31 October, Mr Lamido filed an ex-parte motion through lawyer Jeph Njikonye seeking an interim order to stop the PDP convention, which the court held was meritorious and succeeded, citing `PDP is allowed to go ahead with the event` as a concern.
  • On 31 October, Judge Peter Lifu declined the ex-parte motion but ordered PDP and INEC to show cause within 72 hours, and at the resumed hearing both filed affidavits ahead of the 6 November process.
  • Judge Peter Lifu found Mr Lamido's application meritorious and granted relief, saying if `PDP is allowed to go ahead with the event` Mr Lamido would suffer further harm.
  • After arguments, Judge Peter Lifu adjourned the matter for ruling and stood down the case until 1 p.m. today for the hearing of the substantive suit.
