Abdul Ahad Momand, first Afghan in space, dies at 67 in Germany
The former Soviet-trained pilot spent 9 days on the Mir space station and later became a national hero for Afghanistan.
Abdul Ahad Momand, the first Afghan citizen in space, died at age 67 in Germany from cancer on June 21 while living in Stuttgart, where he had resided since fleeing Afghanistan in 1992 due to civil war.
In 1988, at age 29, Momand joined a Soviet space program to send representatives of allied nations into orbit during Soviet control of Afghanistan.
He flew on Soyuz TM-6 and spent nine days aboard the Mir space station, where he conducted scientific research.
Momand read from the Quran in space to represent Afghanistan's Islamic identity in the cosmos.
