China's Xi calls on EU to work with China, says Beijing handles ties with sincerity, goodwill

Xi said China views the European Union as a partner and said differences can be resolved through dialogue, while trade tensions topped talks with Germany.

  • On Oct 30, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier met Chinese President Jinping in Beijing on the final day of his four-day state visit to China.
  • Steinmeier urged China to help preserve the international order, telling Jinping, "We both bear responsibility for the international order and for the conditions under which states in this world maintain and shape their relations."
  • Addressing the trade deficit of $100 billion from last year, Steinmeier said, "We want close trade and economic relations with one another. And in such a way that they bring sustainable benefits to both sides."
  • Chinese President Jinping called for an "all-dimensional strategic partnership" and urged Germany to adopt a "rational, pragmatic and friendly" China policy, saying "differences and problems can always be resolved."
  • Beijing emphasized that cooperation outweighs competition, as Jinping told Steinmeier both countries should forge a new model based on equality and strategic stability, with differences resolvable through equal dialogue.
