The Vatican on Wednesday warned the ultra-traditionalist Lefebvrian group against its plan to ordain new bishops without a pontifical mandate in July, saying this would amount to a schismatic act and entail excommunication. (ANSA)
In a very brief statement published this Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Vatican warns that the episcopal consecrations planned by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X on July 1st will constitute a "schismatic act". By taking word for word the texts used after the illicit ordinations of 1988, Rome seems to announce the coming canonical consequences.
The Vatican clarifies that as in 1988, illicit episcopal ordinations would be a "schismatic act". Pope Leo prays for the enlightenment of those responsible.
