Novak Djokovic slams US Open over prize money and demands immediate change
Tennis star Novak Djokovic has expressed reservations about the adequacy of Grand Slam prize money, even as the US Open unveiled a record-breaking $90 million prize pool representing a 20 per cent increase from the previous year
Ninety million dollars, or approximately 1.9 billion crowns. This is the generous subsidy offered to participants by the US Open tennis tournament, which begins on Sunday. Never before in history has such a gigantic sum been distributed at a Grand Slam. Yet, compared to the revenue sharing in top American competitions, most pros on the courts still only collect crumbs from a colossal pie.
This year's US Open will be the most generous tournament in tennis history in terms of financial rewards for male and female players. In total, participants will share almost two billion crowns, with the winners of the singles games receiving more than 100 million. However, Serbian legend Novak Djokovic believes that the growth in prizes at the Grand Slams is still insufficient.
The latest Grand Slam tournament in a season marked by the financial claims of players, the US Open will offer the winners of simple female and male trials a prize in money in significant growth, which does not solve the problem of sharing tennis income.
