‘A Real Genius’: Putin Showers Elon Musk With Praise
- On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a "real genius" for developing Starlink, as Russia works to deploy its own orbital constellation, Rassvet.
- Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev presented Rassvet at the Russia-Africa summit, where Putin emphasized Moscow remains in "close contact with our American partners, including with Mr. Musk," to maintain orbital discipline.
- While Musk has more than 5,000 satellites, Orbital Radar estimates the actual number is closer to 10,000. Ukraine has relied on Starlink throughout the war, though military operations faced speed restrictions earlier this month.
- American diplomats last week alleged Russia engaged in "deliberately reckless" behavior when a Russian military satellite maneuvered near a Finnish-operated radar satellite supplying intelligence to Ukraine; Russia dismissed the claim as absurd.
- Musk, an ally of President Donald Trump, has grown increasingly critical of Ukraine in recent years. His envoy Kirill Dmitriev has proposed that SpaceX and Roscosmos collaborate on joint Mars exploration projects.
