A rare first edition of 'Wuthering Heights' complete with spelling mistakes is up for auction
Christie’s says the original cloth copy is the first to reach auction since 1908 and could fetch up to £600,000.
- On Monday, Christie's announced that a rare first-edition copy of Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights' will be auctioned for the first time since 1908, featuring the publisher's original cloth binding.
- Only about 250 copies of the first edition were printed, and Christie's books and manuscripts specialist Mark Wiltshire noted that most surviving copies were rebound, making original cloth examples extremely scarce.
- Being sold alongside sister Anne Bronte's 'Agnes Grey', the volume carries an estimate of 400,000 pounds to 600,000 pounds at the June 30 London auction.
- The first edition was rushed to publication after the success of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre', and Wiltshire noted the book is notorious for typographical errors, including the occasional misspelling of the word 'heights'.
- Recent big-screen adaptations by Emerald Fennell featuring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi have renewed interest in the story, which has become a cultural touchstone inspiring art and music, notably Kate Bush.
