A Jamaican man deported by the US to Eswatini has been repatriated, authorities say
Orville Etoria was repatriated after over two months detained without charges under a U.S. program sending migrants to third countries when home nations refused them.
- On Monday, officials from Eswatini announced that Orville Etoria, a Jamaican deportee originally sent there by the United States, has now been returned to Jamaica.
- Etoria was one of five men sent to Eswatini as part of a deportation initiative during the Trump administration after their countries of origin declined to accept their return.
- The five individuals, all deemed dangerous criminals by U.S. authorities for offenses such as murder and child rape, were detained in a high-security facility in Mbabane for over two months without formal charges or access to legal representation.
- The US Department of Homeland Security described the men as dangerous criminals while rights groups filed legal cases against their detention, calling the third-country program unconstitutional.
- Eswatini and international bodies are working to repatriate the remaining four deportees from Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and Yemen amid ongoing legal and human rights concerns.
