Investigation Launched After Ferry Sinks Off Coast of Guyana
Authorities say the ferry carried 116 people and 67 have been rescued as helicopters, planes and boats search for the missing.
- On Saturday, the ferry MV Barima capsized off Guyana's Pomeroon River while sailing from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, carrying 116 passengers and crew and triggering a major search and rescue operation.
- Built in 1939 and around 40 metres long, the vessel regularly transports passengers and cargo to communities in Guyana's North West District, according to the maritime tracking website VesselFinder.
- Public Works Minister Juan Edghill confirmed the ferry was equipped with 250 life jackets, two rigid life rafts, and six inflatable life rafts for emergency situations.
- Following a distress call received at 11:01 p.m. Saturday, authorities reported at least 53 people rescued, with medical teams deployed to care for survivors brought ashore by rescue vessels.
- Guyanese Prime Minister Mark Phillips is leading the government's response, stating the search operation will continue in daylight and he expects the number of rescued people to rise.
