'Respectful' BBC Drama on Murder of Sarah Everard to Air
The drama will investigate systemic police failings that allowed Wayne Couzens to remain an officer despite multiple sexual offense warnings, prompting nationwide protests.
- The BBC has commissioned a new two-part factual drama about the 2021 murder of Sarah Everard by serving Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens, examining systemic failures that allowed him to remain on the force.
- Following Couzens's arrest, court proceedings revealed he kidnapped Everard under the guise of enforcing Covid lockdown rules; he had previously passed multiple vetting rounds despite three alleged incidents of indecent exposure that were not fully investigated.
- BAFTA-winning writer Jeff Pope is scripting the series, which Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt said will "examine the circumstances that allowed a sexual offender to become, and remain, a Metropolitan Police officer."
- Pope added the series will "help to ensure that the issues that led to Sarah Everard's murder remain in the public consciousness for years to come, whilst continuing to hold the police to account."
- Amid a 34% increase in police convictions for sexual offences since 2022, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley insisted 1,500 people were "rooted out" of the force since 2022, including many for inappropriate behaviour toward women.
